Staying Warm Without a Coat

IMG_8043By mid winter last year, I was done with coats. They were taking over my life and the outfits I was putting together. I could not get excited about anything I was wearing because I knew my coat was just going to become the main focus. You feel like you are wearing the same thing every single day because your coat is all that people see. In December I searched for a remedy to this problem and I found it was this awesome rabbit fur vest from 525 America. I absolutely love this thing!!!! It is gorgeous, has the best feel to it and it super warm because of how thick it is. People often times equate fur with formal, dressy styles, but I am a strong believer that fur is just as practical day to day, as it is for a formal event (See my causal instagram look with this vest HERE).

Vests are one of the best ways to stay warm, because they allow you to do just that, while showing off more of your outfit. I almost view them as more of an accessory than a garment, because they add so much to a look. Whether simple or elaborate, like this fur vest, they are an easy way to make a look seem complete. The extra layer adds contrast and variation to any base garment, plain or printed.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetI styled the vest with a black turtle neck sweater and black denim pants. Any time you add colored denim to a look, you are dressing up casual. Especially black. Black is such a chic color, extremely flattering and the perfect foundation for a more elaborate piece. Because this vest featured hints of black, I thought that an all black base would really dress it up by accentuating the vest and making it stand out. With the neutral taupes, tans and creams in the vest, I knew it was meant for gold accessories. These warm tones make gold the ideal color to accessorize with. This keeps things sophisticated, simple and in the color family. This necklace is from a boutique in Saratoga Springs, New York. If you are ever in Saratoga you have to check it out, they have the best stuff. I love this necklace, with this look, because of its long shape. The extra length immediately draws your attention to the entire look, rather than brining you straight to the neckline.

IMG_8044To add another element of detail I wore a combination pearl and rhinestone bracelet, along with simple gold bangles and plain pearl strands. When wearing bracelets I typically stick to “The Rule of Three’s.” Meaning I start with three bracelets in complementary shapes and sizes and add more based on odd numbers (3…5…7). I think odd number are the best way to create balance.

You can shop this entire look at the links below. I think it would be perfect for a night out or any of the upcoming holidays.
